The increase in the student population and the institutional need to expand areas designated for academic development motivated the development of the structural project for the Alfredo Correa De Andreis Study House. This building, conceived with three levels plus a roof slab, is located in the city of Santa Marta, an area classified by NSR-10 as having intermediate seismic hazard, a condition that requires a seismic-resistant design approach consistent with the structural safety requirements for educational facilities. The study was carried out in compliance with NSR-10 and ACI 318-19, incorporating a detailed analysis of gravitational and seismic loads, geotechnical characterization, and the classification of the structural system. The implemented structural system corresponds to a DMO-type moment-resisting frame, capable of resisting bending moments and composed of solid slabs supported by intermediate beams. One of the most significant challenges of the project was the cantilever, which, with a length of 7.6 meters, is considered one of the longest in the Caribbean region. An inclined column was added as a transfer element, making possible the proper redistribution of loads toward the main structural system to ensure overall stability. The design process included mathematical modeling using specialized software, drift verification, and the evaluation of internal demands for all main elements: slabs, beams, columns, and foundations. For the latter, isolated footings, combined footings, and tie beams were defined according to the mechanical behavior of the soil, verifying bearing capacity, punching shear, shear, and flexural strength. Finally, structural drawings, material quantification, and cost estimation were developed, resulting in a structural design that is safe and functional in accordance with the seismic and operational requirements of a contemporary educational building.
