dc.descriptionEl objetivo de este estudio fue determinar la correlación entre la homofobia y el racismo en estudiantes de medicina de Bucaramanga, Colombia. Se realizó un estudio transversal que incluyó a estudiantes mayores de 18 años. La actitud hacia homosexuales (homofobia o prejuicio sexual) se midió con la Escala de Homofobia (EHF). El EHF da puntajes entre 7 y 35 años y la actitud hacia afrocolombianos (el racismo o la discriminación racial) se cuantificó con una versión española de la Escala de Racismo Moderno (MRS). El MRS ofrece puntuaciones entre 0 y 40. La asociación de la homofobia y el racismo se calculó con el coeficiente de Pearson (r) y el coeficiente de Spearman (rs). Un grupo de 334 estudiantes aceptó participar. La media de edad fue de 20,1 años (DE=1,9), 59,0% eran mujeres. Alfa de Cronbach fue 0,78 para la EHF, y 0,62 para la MRS. Las puntuaciones del EHF fueron entre 7 y 34 (media=17,8; SD=5,4), y las puntuaciones MRS entre 0 y 34 (media=13,8; SD=5,2). Coeficiente r fue 0,35 (p<0,001), y el coeficiente de rs, 0,34 (p<0,001). Se concluye que existe correlación significativa entre estas formas de prejuicio (la homofobia y el racismo) en los estudiantes de medicina de Bucaramanga, Colombia. Se necesita una intervención para reducir los prejuicios en los estudiantes de medicina ya que la futura asistencia de los pacientes podría ser deficiente.
dc.descriptionThe objective of the research was to estimate the correlation betweenhomophobia and racism among medical students in Bucaramanga, Colombia.It was done a cross-sectional study that included students over18 years-old. The attitude toward homosexual people (homophobia orsexual prejudice) was measured with the Homophobia Scale (HS); andattitude toward Afro-Colombians (racism or race discrimination), witha Spanish version of Modern Racism Scale (MRS). Authors computedthe association homophobia and racism using Pearson (r) and Spearman(rs) coefficients. A group of 334 students accepted to participate.Mean age was 20.1 years (SD=1.9); 59.0 % were women. Cronbach alphawas 0.78 for HS; and 0.62 for MRS. HS scores were between 7 and 34(Mean=17.8, SD=5.4); and MRS scores between 0 and 34 (Mean=13.8;SD=5.2). Coefficient r was 0.35 (p<0.001), and coefficient rs, 0.34(p<0.001). As conclusion, there is a positive correlation between theseways of prejudice (homophobia and racism) among Colombian medicalstudents. Intervention is needed to reduce prejudices in medical students.
