dc.descriptionAbstract The Captaincy of Mato Grosso in the eighteenth century is seen as a boundary for excellence. However, the territorial domain thought by agents of the Portuguese Empire was enough not only in treaties and building fortifications. Under the aegis of the Enlightenment, a whole network of knowledge was implemented based on the idea that science should serve the Empire. Effective control of the territory was more complex than the simple military control of the same, although this was paramount. Thus, we analyze the instances of this control in order to discuss what extent the application of the notion that knowledge is power was essential to the area of ​​the western border of Portuguese America, as well as the vicissitudes of this process in Mato Grosso, namely the issue of confidentiality of information. 
dc.descriptionResumo A Capitania de Mato Grosso no século XVIII é vista como uma fronteira por excelência. Todavia, o domínio territorial pensado pelos agentes do Império português não se bastou apenas em tratados e construção de fortificações. Sob a égide do Iluminismo, toda uma rede de conhecimentos foi implementada, tendo como ponto base a ideia de que a ciência deveria servir ao Império. O controle efetivo do território era mais complexo que o simples controle militar do mesmo, ainda que este fosse primordial. Deste modo, analisaremos as instâncias deste controle de modo a discutir em que medida a aplicação da noção de que conhecimento é poder foi essencial para o domínio da fronteira oeste da América portuguesa, bem como as vicissitudes deste processo em Mato Grosso, nomeadamente a questão do sigilo da informação. Resumen La Capitanía de Mato Grosso en el siglo XVIII es esencialmente vista como una frontera. Sin embargo, el dominio territorial pensado por los agentes del Imperio portugués no fue llevado a cabo por tratados y construcción de fortificaciones. Bajo la égida de la Ilustración, se pudo en prática toda una red de conocimientos basada en la idea de que la ciencia debería servir al Imperio. El control efectivo del territorio era más complejo que un mero control militar, aunque este fuera de suma importancia. Por consiguiente, vamos a analizar los niveles de este control con el fin de discutir en qué medida la aplicación de la noción de que conocimiento es poder fuera esencial para el dominio de la frontera Oeste de la América portuguesa, así como las vicisitudes de este proceso en el Mato Grosso, senãladamente la cuestión de la confidencialidad de la información. No obstante lo anterior, la enunciación de las autorizaciones es meramente enunciativa y no descartan nuevas formas de explotación económica y editorial no descritas en este contrato por parte del AUTOR del artículo, a modo individual. 3.  Declara que el artículo es original y que es de su creación exclusiva, no existiendo impedimento de ninguna naturaleza para la cesión de derechos que esta haciendo, respondiendo además por cualquier acción de reivindicación, plagio u otra clase de reclamación que al respecto pudiera sobrevenir. 4.  Que dicha autorización se hace a título gratuito. 5.  Los derechos morales de autor sobre el artículo corresponden exclusivamente al AUTOR y en tal virtud, la UNIVERIDAD se obliga a reconocerlos expresamente y a respetarlos de manera rigurosa.
